The spitting gas out of the caruretor sure sounds like a timing issue. You mentioned that you were sure that the motor was on TDC when you put the distributor in, but are you sure it was on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke?

I second that, pull #1 plug (passenger side front on Fords) and bump the engine over till you feel compression. Bring it by hand (use a 15/16" socket and breaker bar) to 10 degrees BTDC. With the key on, loosen the distributor clamp after making sure you are pointing to #1 area on the cap. Take the coil wire from the cap and place it near a good ground, but not touching slowly move the distributor clockwise until the points just break (they will arc slightly and the coil wire will "pop" to ground. If you do not get this, then back up the distributor until the points are closed and repeat the process. This will static time your engine so it will start. Be sure you have the firing order correct 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 with 1-4 on the passenger side and 5-8 on the driver's side. Do you have adjustable rocker arms? If you do, they may be too tight. Good luck with it.

if your positive that your not 180 off Check firing order, two crossed wires will cause your problems. If that all checks out you might have impoperly set up your cam degree and have the valves opening when they should be completly seated.
