Default Toe board replacement?

I need to replace my floor board and toe board (fire wall patch). After reading many posts here, I think I have a handle on how to replace the floor board, but I have a question about toe board. Do I need to do a butt weld of the toe board to the fire wall in order to make it look decent from inside the engine compartment, or can a lap weld be made to look good?

Definitely a butt weld. Besides aesthetics, a lap weld is suspectible to rust quicker.

Absolutely a butt weld will not only look better, it will be stronger and not suseptible to rust between the two sheets of metal. I hope you have the engine and tranny out already.

Thanks for the input. I was afraid you guys would say I needed to butt weld. After much practice on welding pieces of PC covers together, I am finally getting spot weld reproductions to look OK. I still need work on my lap welds. I have not even tried to start practicing butt welds.
I do have the engine and trany and everything out. It has been a world of fun taking things apart, but I am anxious to actually put something back on my baby.

Should I get some of those clamps that hold the 2 pieces of metal .030†apart for the butt weld?
