ricer questions from past
OK, it was a while ago, but as comes on here quite a bit, there were questions about who would win with this or that, ricer vs mustang. Well i went to the drags this weekend. I have to say there were some pretty quick cars there. There were some Camaro's that were built to the hilt that ran sub 10's. There was a 67 mustang that ran high 14's, looked fairly stock, nothing special, maybe your standard carb/intake mods...dont know motor size, definitely small block...most likely 302. There was a CRX that had a stock 1.6 liter block and vtec heads, that ran right at about 13 secs at about 102-103 mph. Pretty quick little car.
The coup de gras was a 66 Mustang with a big block, shaved shock towers, blower, fat slicks etc. Bad ****. Ran 11.6 at 85 mph. He was off the gas long before the end of the run to only clock 85 mph. So SOME of the ricers are pretty quick. Some of the Mustangs were pretty quick. What was obvious was that in order to play with the big boys, you had to spend some cash. Big Money.

RE: ricer questions from past
I know this guy that races VW. The old bugs. He builds he motors to have 500 or more hp. In a 1/4 he is fast. His top speed in not so good. He has to tear down his motor every time he runs it down the track. His VW could beat my mustang, but not 3 time down the track in a row. My mustang can drive down the road and is very streetable. Not with his.
I know this other guy that has $20,000 in his rice rocket. Its fast, but look at the money. If I had that kind of money in my motor what would it do? I drive mine and don't wory about it breaking down. The faster the motor get, the more likely it will leave you on the side of the road.

You are spot on with the durability. But judging from my two sons experience, it's the FWD tranny's in the rice burners that dont get the job done. We have 3 or 4 blown Honda tranny's on the garage floor. They were all puked by slightly warmed over VTEC motors in Civic's and Integras. The Civic runs high 13's, the Integra low 14's. Certainly not rocket ships but not bad for basically stock four bangers. They spin them to 8 grand plus all the time and have never had a rotating assembley failure. Valve train failures? Yup, but no bottom end failures.
There are some fairly economical alternatives. Number two son is in the process of converting a 90 240sx to a JDM specs. We purchased a complete front clip from a Silvia (Japan version of 240sx with turbo) and had it shipped from Malaysia. IIRC, it's about 250 HP stock. Add a larger turbo, injectors, etc. and you are good for 12 second passes. They are rear wheel drive and pretty bullet proof. The cost for all the "stuff" is about $5,000.00. That said, you can get a pretty decent crate motor with that 5 grand for an American car also and in my opinion, have alot more fun.

Anytime you look at modifying your car, you have to remember the old adage: "SPEED COSTS MONEY, HOW FAST DO YOU WANT TO GO?"
It doesn't matter what the vehicle is, this truth remains the same for cars, boats, motorcyles, snowmobiles, watercraft, lawnmowers, etc.

well for the imports we all kno they own the turns, like drifts etc... but on the strips ALL mucsle cars own it for sure, but there are sum faster imports than muscle cars....but thats only here, there are hardly any turns so theres no way to drift theres only straight roads so what better to do is to mod it for the strip. we all kno v8's own the strip almost every thing u see is v-8 and thats what started it. in japan nothing but turns so they drift and race as for us road racing and the 1/2 mile is our back yard. thats my opinion.

Ricers can be quick, if you dump about 15 grand into them. But that is stupid and no one is willing to do it, so everyone with a civic has like an intake a muffler and a bodykit, that is why well......they are ricers. It is sad but true, and who got the idea to make a 4 cyl fast?

Back in the sixty kids would put a hole then muffler to make it sound fast and take the air breather off to get more hp. Its just kids trying to look cool and don't have the money to.
