if theres a lever in front of the shift **** do you have to pull it in then shift or is it for the reverse lock-out?....
-for example: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...rsview=sku&Ns=
The levers on most B&M and Hurst shifters are for Reverse lockout. Most all ratchet-type shifters have a pull-up lever that must be lifted in order to move it from P to R. Once you are in R you can ratchet to the other gears, but to put it back into P you will have to pull up on the lever again.

If you get a gate-style shifter like my B&M prostick, It has both a lever AND a seperate reverse lockout. The pistol grip allows me to pull the shifter from P to R, and then it must be engaged again if I am going from 2 into D (the 1-2 shift CANNOT slip into D unless I pull the pistol grip). To get the shifter from D or N into R, you have to engage a totally seperate, red reverse lockout lever which has to be pushed foward before you can squeeze the pistol grip and put the shifter back into P.
