unhook the speedo cable from the tranny and pull the slack through the firewall. I replaced mine in my 67 this past spring and that was the key. Aso put a towel or rag over the top of the steering column behind the wheel or the gauge cluster will scratch the heck out of it when you pull it off.

Actually, you can just reach under the dash and unscrew the speedometer cable from there. When you get to where you can see all the wires and light bulbs, get some masking tape and write down on a piece of that tape just which wire/bulb to to what, then attach that tape with the information on it to the wire it belongs to. That will save you some time later to identify which wires/bulbs go to where when you put it all back together.

I don't know if it applies to the 65 models, but our 67 coupe's instrument cluster has a bolt on the far right side which you have to remove by taking out the ash tray. Speedo cable has to be removed by taking off the left side a/c heat controller then fanangling your hand in their to disconnect the cable.

There is no need to unhook the speedo cable from the transmission unless you need to replace it. Just take out all of the screws and pull the cluster out as far as you can and reach behind and unscrew the speedo cable. Very easy! Don't forget the towel over the steering column!
