Check out a local store like pepboys, advanced auto, etc...

I would give you my measurements but mine is currently on jackstands, without the rear end, and getting dropped 1" around, so I dont think you want them

Autozone has a tool oaner problem. You basically pay the price of the tool as though it were new as a deposit that you get back when you return it. This is where I got my spring compressor. Just returned it on Saturday no problems. I believe that you can keep the tool for upto 90 days, but you might want to make sure of this when you ask to "borrow" it.

Like everyone else said, you would be crazy to do this without a spring compressor. Even with the spring compressor, I tightened and loosened the spring while standing at the front of the car as much as possible to reduce the possibility of the spring killing me should anything go wrong. Each spring has hundreds of pounds of force stored in it before you compress it. Multiply that force times the weight (technically mass) of the spring and you've got a lot of damage to anything that it hits if the force is released suddenly.

In my day, we would just take the belt from our trousers, loop it around the spring and then compress the spring by taking a screw driver and twisting both sides of the loop. Young people now-a-days just don’t understand!

That sounds like a good way to do it, but you have to take in consideration, nothing is made like it used to be. Its all imported from china with 2nd hand parts.

Now am I to understand, the compressor just needs to be used to remove it, then once removed I can loosen it up and remove the other? Or will I have to buy two and do them both at the same time?

You can use one (or one set, depending on the style of compressor) spring compressor and uncompress the spring once you remove the spring from the car. Its just a pain because when you uncompress the spring off the car, it gets even longer than when it is on the car. I never liked to lay the compressed spring laying around anyway. You never know when these Chinese belts might fail.
