Default 1965 Fastback 2 + 2

I have been told and am just looking for a second opinion on restoring my '65 Fastback. It currently has a '68 302 in it. I have found a '65 289 c-code engine, which is what the car had originally. My question is, in '65 were the engines stamped to the particular car or can a person put in any 289 engine as long as it meets the correct codes, such a c-code 2V. My only other concern would be whether or not the engine tag, which states the year and month it was produced would need to match the year and month the car was produced. The year obviously, but what do you think about the month matching also? I hate to go through the process of locating a correct 289 and installing it when it will have little or no effect to restoring the car back to original.

If you want to make it concours correct you will need to make sure the date codes on the major engine parts like the block, intake and other parts are a bit younger than the warranty date on your car from the door plate. The match should actually not be exact since engine parts were made ahead of production. For instance my fast back was made in August of 64 but the engine parts are April of 64.
