Find car by VIN?

Find car by VIN?
Anybody, short of law enforcement, ever locate a vehicle by VIN? While cleaning up the Toploader out of my since sold '65 GT, I looked at the tag and saw that it was HEH-T. I found it odd that a close ratio tranny was in my A code and also that the tranny was used until 10/1/64 and mine wasn't built until the end of April '65. As I finished cleaning the underside, I saw that there was a VIN number stamped on the bottom: 5R07K###### (don't remember the S/N off hand). According to 4speedtoploaders.com, some early K codes had the VIN stamped.
Needless to say, I'm stunned at the find. So, before just selling it, I thought I'd see if the original vehicle is still on the road and looking for its transmission back.
Short of that, does anybody have any idea on the best way to sell it, i.e. to get the best return possible to help fund the painting of my '65 2+2?
Thanks.

On the bright side, there are others on that sight who are searching for the HEH-T tagged transmissions. It may have a happy ending after all.
