Default Cost to paint

I'd like to try to get a very rough idea of what it is going to cost to paint my '65 2+2. I will finish up the interior myself, but I need to basically have all the external prep and paint done by a pro. With baby #4 due in January, I just will not have the time. I'l be lucky enough to get the mechanicals done by then anyway. [:-]

I'm gueesing that since I live in L.A., prices will be a bit higher like everything else seems to be here. Anyway, I'd appreciate to hear others' experiences with body and paint and if there are any definite do's and don'ts that I should be aware of.

Thank!

We need more information. Do you know for sure that you will not need any metal work such as welding in new patches to take out the rust? Do you want the doors, hood and trunk lid taken off to prep and spray separetly? What kind of paint do you want the painter to use? etc. Generally, a quality paint job is in the 5K area. Some are even more.

It's is a L.A. car which has been in a garage almost exclusively for the last 15 years. The only bit of rust on the whole car is very slight surface rust in a few spots on the floor and a tiny little bit by the rear window trim. As for body work, there are a few dings on the side and probably some very minor smoothing out that is not easily detected with the state of the paint right now. Because this car will be driven and is not a showcar (has a swapped in 351W, global west full suspension, 5 speed), the paint job does not need to be flawless. That said, it is too nice a vehicle to take it to Maaco, Earl Scheib, etc. I want a quality job that will last and look nice.

As for paint type, I don't have a clue. It was originally '65 Silver Blue and I intend to either have it painted that color or perhaps even '64-1/2 Guardsman Blue or something along those lines. The problem is that I know so little about current costs and materials, I feel like I couldn't even walk into a shop without knowing if I'm getting bent over a chair. [sm=chairshot.gif] I'm not frightened away by $5K if that is what it really takes for a quality job, but want to pay a fair price.

Thanks.

assuming that there is no bondo and all the rust is just surface then i think that i should be no more the $8k for prep, prime and paint.
