Default RE: Acceleration in perspective

back in the 80s HOTROD got the Navy to race Don Garlits TF dragster with an F/A 18. Even with the catapult launch the dragster won, thats back when they first broke into the 4.90's. The jets have the top end but 0-330 is all dragster. Figure 8000hp in a 1900lb rail, thats some impressive power to weight, and youwanna talk hp per liter like the ricers, well TF is limited to less than 500ci and they make more power than they can utilize and measure. approximately 8.1L so thats about 1000hp or more per liter.

NHRA has been slowing them down, they are limited to something like 80% nitromethane now instead of the past 100% to 90%, they cant run any lower gear than a 3.20 either. They are so far above the normal car that a 4.11 would slow them down considerably, since they are direct drive. No gears in it except for the final drive. imagine how fast they would be with a 2.70 or a 2.50 gear.. 400mph is a possiblity with those gears..

i'd like to see one lined up next to a 15 on full afterburner.... that'd be cool
One of the car mags did something similar, I believe at Miramar. They raced various modded cars including a Langenfelter twin turbo Z06 one race motor bike, and an F1 car on two miles of straight away. The bike had by far the best initial acceleration, but faded at the end compared to the cars. Most of the cars were still accelerating after 2 miles (though not the F1, which was drag limited to around 200 mph like the motor bike) and at over 200 mph. Finally, they measured the acceleration of an F15. Most of the cars would have still been ahead at the quarter mile.

I think the Ariel Atom is awesome as well. I just couldn't remember it's acceleration numbers off the top of my head. I think that the Veyron catches it in straight line acceleration around 100 mph (0-100, 6.8 seconds for the Veyron) and would turn in a faster time in the 1/4 mile, of course you could buy over a dozen Atoms for the price of one Veyron ($1 million, I believe), and the Atom would toast it in the corners.
