87 ford 302 in 66 stang
i purchased a 87 ford 302 to put into my 66 stang and the 87 motor is a rear sump oil pan. my old 289 motor was a front sump oil pan. will this rear sump oil pan hit the cross member below or should it be alright? thanks for all replies, kevin

You'll have to keep your oil pan, front cover(dipstick), oil pan pick-up. The reason for the front cover is the 87 motor has no provisions for the dipstick in the front timing cover. Also when performing this swap make sure to check proper clearance for the fuel pump eccentric and coveras some of the early covers combined with the wrong parts will grind a hole in the timing cover!

I could be wrong on this, but I believe that you need to have the flywheel and harmonic balencer that goes with the engine for balancing purposes. I know I had to keep the one on my 82 5.0 stang engine.

That is true about the balance, do not use the ones from a 60s or 70s small block. I think 1982 was when they went to a 50 ounce balance versus 28...true for automatics and manuals.

1981 was the start. I also found out something else...Half the engine and tranny is metric. You might want to get the driveshaft yoke off the tranny you plan to use. It's going to be a hunt for the right parts you need. My advice is to get the whole donar car if you can, or make sure you got all the corresponding pieces you will need, IE: power steering pump, alt, ect. I'm also pretty sure the one you want uses a serpintine belt. These can be changed over if you want.
