i6 vs 289 or 302
I have a 66 mustang with an inline 6 that I believe is the 250, I need to double check that. I am going to start the restore process but am debating whether I should stick with the i6 or if I should swap it out for a 289 or 302. Because I am trying to not go into debt doing this I was curious to know what would be the cheaper route to go. I still want to pack some power under the hood and was looking at different i6 mods but was curious to know if it would be cheaper to drop in a 289/302 and get the same power. Also, with the cost of gas I was hoping to get the most fuel efficency as possible - is there much difference between a 289 and 302 to know the difference? I was getting around 20mpg with my i6.
The i6 would need a rebuild if I decide to go with it and I may possibly need to replace/repair the transmition. Love to hear what people think.

If your not trying to kill your wallet, it would probably be good to stick with your engine now. The I6's are still a respectable engine IMO, and will get you around cheaply. Dropping a v8 into it is going to require a v8 conversion which equals a good bit of money invested into the car.

im 1 year into my i6 to 302 swap. swapping to a v8 is a lot more work than just the motor. when its all said and done i will have spent 4x as much on the swap then it was to rebuild the i6. worth every single cent when you turn the key though.

As far as I know, the only I6 offered in a 66 Mustang was 200 CID. All I've ever read or been told is that if you want a V8 Mustang buy a V8 Mustang because the cost of changing a I6 Mustang to V8 is very high.

I was looking at probably putting disc brakes on the front end. I am aware of the suspention and axel upgrades and all that goes with it. That was another reason why I was thinking of sticking with the i6. Although the necessary conversions to make ready for a v8 only make me second guess due to cost - the work doesn't bother me too much.

if you want a v8, buy a v8 stang and sell yours...will save sooo much money. only reason i did the swap is because my father was the original owner of my 64.5, sentimental value

Here is another question. If I do infact have a 200 would it be worth it to find a 250 and put that in. If that is a good idea where are some good recomendations to find engines. I've been trying do do some searches and am not find the best places. I am reviewing fordsix.com and classicinlines.com for some tips and ideas on how to go about doing the job.

I have an I6 that I was thinking about upgrading to a 351, but after researching the costs involved, I decided to sell the I6 which just so happens to be listd on MF classifieds (plug! ) and bought a 302. I guess the question is whether your priorities to have something that looks good and can move fast or if you just want something that looks good and is dependable, but won't be winning races of the line. My 6 was definitely dependable and aside from the speed / growl factor, I had no complaints!
