72 351C Initial start problem

RE: 72 351C Initial start problem
If the distributor is 180 out, it won't start. So, it can't run if it can't start. Double check the plug wires again to make sure they are in the correct order, then loosen the distributor and turn it slightly in either direction to see if the engine idles better. Find that sweet spot, then tighten down the distributor and check to see where the timing is. It should be somewhere over 10 degrees BTDC with that cam. Now, if it is idling smoothly and you hit the accelerator and it bogs down, then most likely your carburetor needs a rebuild, or at least larger jets. It could also be the accelerator pump not working.

RE: 72 351C Initial start problem
Hi mike,
I have had several suggestions on my problem here. I may not have mentioned that my entire inlet/fuel/header/exhaust system is brand new. I have a new Edelbrock 1406 600cfm carb with an edelbrock 2750 inlet manifold, Hedman headers and a dual exhaust sytem, the carb and inlet manifold are supposed to be correct for each other per Edelbrock.
I think it is not ignition related as I have tried different timing settings with no change.
The motor fires right up, but will only idle and the longer it idles the rougher it gets until it stops. It does not respond to the throttle.
I have checked my fuel line pressure and it is 7psi so I am wondering if this is a problem.
Ant thoughts?

Hi,
I am pretty sure it is not ignition related as it fires right up and I ahve tried different timing positions.
I may not have mentioned my carb, inlet manifold are Edelbrock 1406 600 cfm and manifold 2750 resepectively. They are brand new and supposedly matched for each other.I am concerned about my fuel pressure. it is 7 psi and I am thinking that I may be flooding the carb stopping it from picking up.
Do you have any thoughts on this please?
Thanks

Have you fired the engine without the rest of the driveline installed?
The only reason I ask, is because unless you have done something truly silly and didn't hook up the throttle to the gas pedal...you are running out of places to look.
You have fuel....you confirmed that.
When the car isn't running, I assumed you have opened the throttle and confirmed the carb shoots a stream of gas out of the primaries
You say, the car starts, and you press the gas...and absolutely nothing happens...the rpms do not increase, the idle does not change, nothing silch nada, zip zippo. And EVERYTHING is new, so you have a ****load of variables.
I would start eliminating items.
I would drop the trans and the torque converter, fire up the motor and see if it will rev up to eliminate anything from the flywheel back

Don't you think it would be easier to just loaf it around the block to verify the integity of the transmission. With a broken band or something you won't be able to move the car.
I'd throw a set of new plug wires on before I did anything else.
