Default motor work this winter....

i was thinking about pulling out my tired 289 2v this winter and decided to check out my options for what to do, or what to replace it with.... i don't plan on the car going to the track, and i really don't care what it runs, all i want is something that will get up and go when i kick it in the ***.

i was pondering the idea of a 331 or 347 stroker motor and was wondering if any of you guys have some experience with either or know someone who does.... i know about some the 347's being known for oil consumption because of the oil ring intersecting the wrist pin hole.... i also see that they sell stroker kits where this isn't a problem anymore so if i go that route i just need to make sure i get the right kit.....

i could just buy the short block, then do my heads or find decent aftermarkets to throw on there.... which aftermarkets do you guys recommend/run??.... i'm on a budget here, so i'm looking to get the most for my money, AFR's look great and i've heard good things about them, the price is the part i can't handle.... thanks guys

If you are on a budget, how much do you plan on spending??

As with everything I have done, (2 overhauls and 1 long block engine replacement) expect to spend 25% more than you plan to.

As for your current motor, I am fond of the 289. High reving and lots of potential. But a 302 short block, GT-40x cast iron heads, cam, performer intake, 600-650 cfm carb, and headers will get you over 300 rear wheel HP. Keep the C-4, there is less HP loss through it than any other transmission.

Still, the bottom line is "What do you want to spend and how much time do you have"?

i could drop as much as 4000 on the whole thing, but i really don't want to, if i don't have to.... the only problem with my current setup is that it sat for 18 years, i have it all up and running, inspected and driveable for the first time..... but the motor and tranny are tired... i already own a set of tri-y's, edelbrock performer intake and a edelbrock 1406, so those parts will not be included in the price of the build up....

the motor is a 65 289 casting, 2v and stock bore as far as i know, the car is originally a 260 car and the date codes don't match so changing blocks for this project is no big deal. the motor does not smoke, ever, it starts easily, doesn't use any oil, but i have no idea how many miles are on it..... the heads are what worry me, seems to me that some one didn't set valve lash correctly at some point or the pivots on some of the rocker arms just wore out at some point, which means that a few of the rockers now slide off the sides of the valve stems and smash off the top of the spring retainers..... i know its only a matter of time until one of the retainers is damaged badly enough that the spring lets loose and the valve drops into the cylinder..... this will not be a good thing...

thing is, i can't justify pulling a motor from a car just for head work.... while its out, i would want it gone over..... and assuming it would need machine work, new slugs, bearings, oil pump etc..... + cost of redoing my heads or finding other aftermarkets....

there's another pickle, if i am going to buy new valves, springs and rockers to redo my old heads, why not get them punched out for 1.94 intake, and 1.60 exhaust and screw in studs for roller rockers right away too??.... spend all this money on my old heads VS new aftermarkets with all that good stuff done already....

so what it comes down to is this, price of building my block and heads, VS price of long block stroker, VS price of short block stroker and other heads...

and the C4 is going, sorry but i HATE automajics.....

well I would buy a set of alum heads then redo those heads as machine work is expensive..a set of afr 165 would work or a set of Proline's

you need to set down and decide what you REALLY want from the car. that 289 is a good engine or you could buy a 302 done for around 2500 with a roller cam.....redo the c-4 witha 2500 stall and shift kit and trans cooler...and going to a 3.90 gear
ex.
306
165 heads 1.90/1.60
480-494 cam 112 centerline
headers
dual plane intake
625 demon carb
holley fuel pump set @ 7 psi
