because the 289 block casting has shorter cylinder skirts and it can lead to problems because of the longer stroke
FYI The difference between the two is about 1/10 of an inch. I have a 289 block with 302 rods and crank in my 65. Not too long ago the engine was out being rebuilt and I mentioned on a forum it would have 302 bottom end parts. Someone like yourself posted that it was a mistake and going to be problems. I was concerned and did some research ( talking with engine builders, asking people in forums, searching the internet, ect.) and learned there in really nothing wrong with doing it. The engine had many miles on it with the 302 rod and cranks before I had it rebuilt, and it ran great (Had it rebuilt do to oil leaks and a bit of smoking). Now the engine is a screamer and handles 6,000 rpm like it's child's play.

"Idiot" huh? I know it's been said before, but don't post with advise when you don't know what your talking about. No one benefits when people spill a bunch of hearsay and misinformation.

Soaring,

I guess I should have actually looked before posting. I thought that the 302s only came with 4v carbs in 68. I stand corrected. Did the 289s, which I believe were only used through the first part of 68, only have the 2v carb, or am I just totally imagining things?[&:]

The 289 came in 3 versions. C code is a 2V carb engine (200 HP) .....A code is a 4v engine (225 HP) ...and the Hipo (275 HP). Actually, before these engines which were introduced in the '65 after August models (except for the Hipo which was introduced in April) there was a 289 D code, but it was a low compression version. It and the 170 cid 6 banger were replaced in August of 64 with the C and A code V8's, and the 200 cid 6 banger replaced the 170.
