Default 4 speed overdrive

I've been trying to explain the benefits of a 5 speed over a 4 speed to some of my friends and they are being pretty ignorant about it. One of them said he had a overdrive 4 speed transmission to go behind the 460 that he is supposedly putting in his mustang. Did ford ever even make a 4 speed manual transmission that had overdrive?

The Granada had one. Similar to the Toploader but 4th was O/D Not a desirable tranny for a high torque engine.

not that I am aware of.

there were the Fairey overdrives that the Brits used in Landrovers and other such contraptions old chap.
60's Jags and I think Rovers and a few others had an overdrive system similar, but i have no idea how it worked. I think it was some sort of electric mechanism.

I have never heard of an overdrive Ford 4 spd, but it would be theoretically possible to make 4th less than 1:1

I've never heard of a manual 4 speed with OD in a Mustang. As far as I know, the T-5 was the first. IIRC, back in the old days, Henry J or one of those off brands had a 6 banger engine with a 4 speed overdrive, but I think the overdrive was a separate box from the main transmission, and you had to pull out a **** or do something other than just change gears. Don't quote me on that, because it has been mucho years since I drove that car.

well i hate to say it but my friend is about half retarded and talks about a lot of stuff, but most of the time doesnt know what he's talking about

hes got a 67 or a 68 fastback and he says he is going to do an eleanor clone and put a 460 in it

my other friend lee has a 1970 nova that he got and hes always trashin my mustang and sayin how his 383 is gonna walk all over my mustang, i just let him talk

im hoping to have a 302 with between 350 and 400 hp with a t-5 behind it and probably 4.11's in the rear end

i dont know a lot about transmissions and gearing but ive heard others talk about that setup and how with the 5 speed and low gears you could get quckier accelleration yet still not have to wind your engine out at 60 mph

302 with a T5 is very popular. Lots of the 5.0 guys will tell you that a 4:11 gear will be the best setup and with the O/D gear you'll have good fuel economy.

The 383 probably will walk all over your 302, because 350-400 hp will break your t5 soon enough. 4.11s and t-5 equals no traction on the street, and slicks will break your t5.

Hey Daniel, would a World Class T-5 with a rebuild kit from Ford racing solve that weakness? http://www.speedyperformanceparts.co...ild-kit_z.html

when the t-5 lets loose ill get a t-56, they can handle up to about 600 hp

as for the traction, i fgure a set of shelby style weld in traction bars and a limited slip dif will take care of that, and what would cause a nova with 350-400hp to get better traction, besides the fact that it weighs more?

If that nova with a 383 is only got 350-400 hp he needs to find a new builder our lowest 383 puts out 440hp with 450 lb of torque or hes lieing to you and will eat that 302 for lunch. You can get a 418 winsor that will smoke the day lights out of him.
