302 5.0L HO EFI FUEL INJECTION MOTOR!

RE: 302 5.0L HO EFI FUEL INJECTION MOTOR!
This is just my opinion but...
A bone stock 5.0 is somewhere around 225 HP SAE. The original 289K motor was rated at 271 BHP. The 289 had a solid lifter cam and would rev 6-7 grand easy. The 5.0 roller cam will float the valves around 5500 rpm but has gobs of tourque. They both can run in the 14's in the quarter with little to no issues. With some NOS, even quicker. IMO the EFI 5.0 is much more fun to drive. You should listen to JamesW, you don't need 400-500HP. A stock 5.0 will be plenty. Also EFI can and will make more HP than a carb and get better mpg. The cam and heads are critical to maximizing HP and torque but again I think you will be pleseantly surprised with how the stock 5.0 performs. The swap sounds confusing to you at this point but but if you buy the complete engine, the after market makes a flywheel for older trans so you can keep whatever is in there or upgrade to overdrive with the 5.0 flywheel. Companies like WindsorFox make a harness to plug in the EFI and there are fuel pumps that fit the stock 67 tank. It's a conversion that's been done, in fact James website is a perfect example! MustangsPlus and other sell everthing you need.
Again this is MY opinion and you know what they say about opinions...

RE: 302 5.0L HO EFI FUEL INJECTION MOTOR!
Carbs make more absolute power than EFI. EFI is better for a street car.
The 1/4 mile times you're quoting are very misleading. The 5.0L Mustang did run 14's on sticky radial tires and modern shocks. The old Mustangs would run 14's with slick bias tires and horrible dampers. The old Mustangs that ran 14's will run 13's with modern tires and some modernization of the suspensions. My '71with a stock 302-2v, 3-spd manual ran 14.3@93mph the first time to the track, a track that sits a little under 3000 feet and had a temperature of 100*F. This is a perfect example of why magazine racing isn't a good idea.
Stock 302's (even HO's) have low lift cams without much duration, which is why they run out of breath so quickly. A mild cam with 0.48x-0.49x lift and 220* duration @ 050 will provide a mild idle that's compatible with stock torque converters (in most cases), good gas mileage, and good power throughout the power band. EFI or carb choice depends on the skill of the owner and if they want to tinker or just turn the key and drive without worrying about the fuel situation.

not really carbs are just easier for a layman to tune to a certain point
efi can be made efficent for the entire rpm range with tuning a nice efi setup will make more hp and torque

RE: 302 5.0L HO EFI FUEL INJECTION MOTOR!
Great forum! First time poster here. I have a 68 Mustang with a 289/C4 that has a blown motor.I have a 92 5.0 that runs great. So, Questions to swap the 5.0 in:
I need to get a 50oz flywheel for the auto.
Install the 5.0 harmonic balancer. (?)
What about the dist gear? Can I use a1985 style dist or is there a aftermarket gear availble for the stock dist?
Original water pump?
Original T/Cover?
Besides that, anything else??
Thanks in advance!!
Ken

You can run the 28oz stuff, just run the balancer AND the flexplate. Don't mix 28oz and 50oz balancers/flexplates.
Take the timing cover off your 289 and put them on the 5.0L. You'll probably want your fuel pump eccentric off the 289, as well. Waterpump, etc. from the 289. Everything external will pretty much swap, even the induction system.
I'm not 100% sure on the dizzy gear. I've heard both ways on whether you'll need to do a gear change. Call up MSD and ask them (or any other ignition/dizzy manufacturer for that matter) to make sure.
Now would be a good time to upgrade to a 4-barrel setup (Weiand Stealth with Holley 600DP) and aftermarket ignition (MSD all-in-one dizzy or 6AL ignition box if the budget allows) for a little more performance.

It would cost you less to get a crate 347 which easly putout 4-500hp and have the 28oz balance. You can get one for about $3600.00

How far out are you guys at T&L on delivery for the 347 and does that $3600 include shipping? If not, about how much for shipping to the west coast? When I was looking for an engine, all T&L's Ebay feedback was indicating that it was taking about 3 months or more. Between that and not being able to get ahold of anybody there or get a return phone call, I went elsewhere.
Thanks.
