Default motor swap

i am pulling out the 289 this winter. i was just going to have the heads redone and the bottom end done 30 over, etc. you know, your basic rebuild and stick it back in, only difference being that my C4 was staying out and my newly aquired 4 speed setup was going in instead. then i ran into a buddy of mine who i haven't seen in awhile and he has a 351w he is trying to sell. from what he tells me, it was just gone over and rebuilt with a mild cam and the whole nine yards last year..... never made it into the car, never fired. it was done at the same machine shop that i was gonna take my 289 to. he offered to sell it to me at half the price of what i was expecting to pay for a rebuild and with a kid on the way for me, money is an issue.

question is, will all the parts i picked up for the 289, bolt on and work with the 351?... tri-y's, 4 speed..... etc. i know 289/302 heads need the bolt holes drilled out to 1/2 to be used on the 351w, but that is concern for down the road. i would like for all of my parts to be interchangeable in case a problem arrises....i.e. fuel pump, water pump, starter, intake, oil pan..... what works, what doesn't?... thanks

Go for the 351 windsor. very nice. especially if he is gonna sell it cheap to you. as far as parts fitting. the trans will but you will prob. have to get some modifaction to the bellhousing. the fuel pump and water pump im not sure on but i dont think you could interchange those. but for sure i know that the intake and oil pan are not the same. really the only engine that is really interchangable as far as parts go is the 302. hope i helped a bit.

Personally i would go with a T5 standard.lol i had a c4 before just to fun to me..imo

Keep the 289! They are great motors. A 1964 needs a 289. Don't the 351 weigh more? If it does, you will need spring or it will handle like crap. A 64 is about 2500lb. Keep a fast little motor that wock great with a 1964 mustang. Stock the 289 are slow , but you do some work on them and the become fast. One more thing, I like the T-5. It works great in my 1966 ford mustang with a fast 289 , not a 351.

i've already decided against the 351, just for the simple fact that i can't interchange parts down the road. where i live, i have 2 other guys that scrounge up ford parts within a 30 mile radius. that of course is opposed to the 300 guys in the same radius that run chevys. so having 2 motors for one car that stuff like the intake, pan, etc., that don't interchange is kind of senseless. i'll build the 289 and be done with it. thanks for the suggestions..... oh yeah... anybody have a z bar setup they don't need?.. lol... i need the whole thing, both mounts, z bar itself, rod to pedal, rod to clutch fork, and clutch fork.... thanks..
