1967 mustang 351 cleveland clutch issues
I have a 1967 mustang wiht a 1973 351 cleveland engine. since the car was a automatic six I have changed it to a 4 speed toploader manual forma a1965 mustang. no that i have clutch isssues the z bar for a small block wont fit. I thought about getting a big block z-bar and since thats expensive i want to make sure that that will fix my problems. I know that there are several of you that have 67s with 351 cleveland, and i remmeber one was a manual.

As you are probably aware, a Cleveland has the same bolt pattern as a 289/302/351w. I'm pretty sure a big block Z bar won't work. You may need different bell housing/chassis pivot mounts to make the small block bar fit.

well its not a matter of the mounts the small block z-bar is just too long for the pivoits to fit where they need to go. the crossbar wont fit between the frame and the engine, like it should. and the reasn i am wondering about the big block z-bar is because the cleveland is in the same family as the 351m, and 400, which are the biggest smallblocks ford made, which are sometime considered small big block. the bolt pattren is the smae from 289 th 351 regardless of the model, that i i know, the cleveland has bigger dimensions then even the windsor. I have a friend who has a windsor in a 67 and he could easily use the small block, thats why i think its a cleveland issue.

The 351m and 400 have the big block 429/460 bolt pattern. They are taller and wider than a Cleveland. Many years ago, I put a Cleveland in a 66 coupe that originally had a 289. I used all of the stock clutch linkage with no modifications. While a Cleveland is physically larger than a Windsor, the width at the bell housing flange is the same. Also keep in mind that in 67, the big block that was used was the FE, not the 385 series. The part number for a small block 65/66 z bar is different than a 67/70 z bar. If you are trying to use the early bar, that might be the problem. Good luck, hope you get it squared away.
