Ammeters are series connections.
If you have an auto: Tranny temp, engine oil pressure, and engine temp are the 3 primary gauges. Voltmeter is nice, too. With a manual, delete the tranny temp.
FYI, make sure your tranny stays much cooler than the engine for longest life. Anything under 150 is great.

You don't see Amp gages anymore. They phased them out of Ford cars in the late 60s/early 70s. Amp gages ran in parallel to the Alternator-Battery cable, and simply showed if the system was charging or discharging. Turn on your headlights and it deflects to the left (discharging). Turn on your headlights while the car is running and it deflects to the right (charging).
The Voltmeter measures the voltage being fed to the battery. Typically between 12.5-14V.
