When to paint?

RE: When to paint?
Paint is costly!!! First determine what you want to do with your car in teerms of show or drive frequently. A qulaity paint job usually includes removal of fenders, apron and any else that can be removed to eliminate making and prep time. It will be costly inititally but will lead to a great finish depending on what your goal for the car is in the long run!!! Garage and show or restore and drive!! I'm with restore and drive!!!

RE: When to paint?
Thanks for the tips. I guess I'm going to have to wait on the paint and deal with it in a few years --- My priorites now are engine, suspension and interior. I hope that makes sense.

RE: When to paint?
a paint job can be acomplished with out removing the interior and engine with careful masking but if u paint with the interior in it can leave a paint smell in the interior for a while

RE: When to paint?
the jamb can be shot after they are taped you let them dry
with the new soft edge masking tape(its basically round strip foam) u can paint the out side of the car and have no hard tape line in the jamb. the cars engine compartment can be masked in front of the radiator, above the motor, below the motor andf for a good rule of thumb i like to mask fro nteh pinchweld to the booth floorand tape it down kep the underside from getting overspray and after i do auniform coat of base i like to wet sad it to remove any dir nib(since there now traped in the base) finish it off with another coat of base with the proper flash time then clear
now granted for a show stopping finish u can paint the car with the fenders off the interior removed, engine tranny out etc, but id only be going concours/ stright show car and probably would never be driven except off of a trailer

RE: When to paint?
the amount of overspray has alot to do with the painter wrapping the car properly! we do about 40 cars a week at my shop and if the painter is in a hurry then we have overspray which he has to remove, if he takes a extra 10 minutes then no overspray! it sounds like the shop wanting to paint the car wants to go the easiest way out and not mask off alot of things. Go with dual stage paint! It is base coat /clear coat paint that will give you a 10-15 year paint job where single stage depending on where you live will typically give you a 5-7 year paint job (hense the typically remark!) and the 1 & 1/2 gallon of paint is probably not sprayable mix! on the paint there is the paint, reducer, and hardnerat my shop with the paint (sikkens) it is 4:1:1 mix on the that will typically give you about 2&3/4 gallons of sprayable mix.
