Default 66 Mustang Steering Linkage

My wife has a 66 6 cylinder Mustang that I will eventually be swapping out for an 89 5.0 and a T5. I also have a Granada disc brake setup for it that I will be installing at the same time as the engine. In the mean time, the carneeds the front end rebuilt. Can I swap the 6 cylinder steering linkage (tie rod ends, idler arm, etc.) for the V8 linkage without changing the spindles? My understanding is all of the other parts (ball joints, control arm bushings, etc.) are the same, only the linkage is different. I understand that I will have to change the outer tie rod ends when I go to the Granada brake setup. Thanks for any help!

The I6 tierod mount hole is too small for the V8 tierods along with the arm that it ataches to is longer then V8, so no it will not work. you do realize you have to change every thing from the pitman arm to the spindles. the steering box itself is the only steering part that is the same between V8 and I6

Dang, I was hoping it would work. Maybe I will have to do the disc brake conversion and run mismatched wheels for a while. I do realize that I need to change the entire steering linkage, I was just hoping I could change the linkage now to the V8 style and then do the disc brake conversion later by just changing tie rod ends. Thanks for the information!

I had the same situation. I changed all the steering over from 6 to V8 components and installed the Granada spindlers and Granada outer tie rods. The rest of the components were standard 65 V8 parts.

Check out the Granada brake swap page on my website below.

The original steering boxes were basically sealed units. They don't require lube, unless something has gone wrong with them. You'd have to take it apart to add grease.

No, you don't have to take the box apart to lube it. Just follow these instructions on my website: http://www.stangerssite.com/lubrication.html

Do any of you guys have problems with your headers clearing the pitman arm?

Nothing on the I6 will swap over to V8 steering, not even the centerlink. I just finished that project had to change; pitman arm, centerlink, idler arm, inner and outer tie rods.
