That would be factory air. More than likely, it has R12 in it unless you have had it changed over to 134A. The R12 nipples are smaller than the 134A, so you can't put 134A into an R12 nipple. You just need to take your car to an air con place and have them service it for you. It will be a couple hundred dollars to change to the R134A. Your compressor may not be working either because it could be frozen up or the clutch is burned out. So, get ready for a few hundred dollars for a new compressor as well.

It depends on where in New Mexico you are located. I had land up in Cloudcroft in the Lincoln National Forest, and it was quite pleasant during the summer without air conditioning. Now, down in the desert you will fry. However, I drove cars without air conditioning in west Texas for 30 years and didn't die. You just have to open that vent and roll down the windows. It's called a 62 air conditioner. You drive 60 mph with both windows down.

I dont' have "all" of the right tools, but I can make your a/c work. I have done several conversions to r134a without incident, this is probably the way to go. If you decide to do this you will probably need to change your compressor if it has not been replaced in the last few years.
