4 barrel carbs have 2 basic configurations - Vacuum secondary or Double pumper
Vac sec carbs have one accelerator pump and utilise 2 barrels out of the 4 initially. then manifold vacuum increases with heavier right foot brings the second 2 barrels into play...more fuel for more power and more revs. Its essentially an economy thing. if you stay off the gas, it doesnt use near as much fuel.
Double pumper has 2 accelerator pumps. the secondaries are mechanically opened and the pump provides additional fuel for better response to the pedal before the secondaries can provide it. D/P more used on performance street or race motors where the response to fuel economy is "who gives a ****"
Sorry its not that good an explanation

Not all of them.. I have picked up nice carbs that were jetted completely wrong from a bunch of the circle trackers back home.. Swap the 52/54 jets out of the 850 double pumper, install 80/82 and now it actually works!
Some guys know, some guys dont.. gotta be careful about who you let work on your stuff..
For the most part a racer should know..
