you can get well over 400 with either 302 or 347.
if you want to **** your pants every time you drive it, go 351 stroked to 408 or chuck a big block in it.
you can get as much hp and torque as you are prepared to pay for.
remember, a 68 stang aint small, but its still relatively light. Suspension and brakes on all but the best restomods are pretty primitive too. You dont need 600hp for a rush just as you dont need to drive it at 150mph to feel like you are flying!

seems like afr heads and a new cam is the way to go... but at that point im at only about 350-400 horsepower for about $2000... for that much money shouldnt i just start with a crate motor and work thata way?
btw, very helpful links thank you very much
Getting acrate motor running in the car for less than 2k with more than 400 horsepower would be tough unless you can find a good used one. I think leaving the 302 in there is worth it. There are a ton of articles out there on how to build them up. H/C/I, Stroker kit, supercharger...there are a lot of options. It's a light car too so 350-400 hp will be faster than whatever ricer you used to drive that we need pics of

literally mean increaseing the stroke so the piston goes down further in the bore and if u ran a blower that 5.0 would last right on its no import

Is this car going to be used to smoke your buddiesricersafter you return from your tour? Is it a straight line car that doesn't care about handling corners? or do you want it to go around corners on rails? You first need to be honest with yourself as to what it is going to be used for - what puts a smile on your face. That's all that matters - correct? The engine will determine how the car can be utilized after your build up is complete. If all you want is a straight line attack pony to rocket away from the stop light then by all means "There is no replacement for displacement". Go hunt down a VERY reputable engine (who buildsONLY engines) and have him take a minute to do some calculations on paper for you. (Weight of the car / displacement / gearing etc... to see where you need to be for HP/Torque). Then have him outline a RELIABLE motor that can do all that. In my opinion displacement is what gets you the reliability since you don't have to stand on it as hard (via NOX/boost/foot on pedal) to get what you want out of it. I always favor reliability since the last thing you want is to scatter your $6K motor on the street as you are showing off.

If you want something that corners (meaning lightweight motor up front) then you have a whole new ball game. An aftermarket front end suspension is a good thing, not necessary but it helps. A stroked 331 or stroked 392 are better motors if you want handling.
It all boils down to the size of your wallet and making sure you don't just blow some money on stuff that doesn't do what puts a smile on your face. Best to go to a cruise night and ask around to see what guys have for motors and maybe get a ride in one that is similar to what you are looking to do to see if their car pulls hard enough to put a smile on your face - at least then you will havea good place to start for what you want...

Get a copy of the Mustang's Plus catalog - there is an article in there about reinforcing the pan of a Mustang and also a 351 motor that they built up and put into it. They even take it to the drag track and beat a late model Camaro.

ARRGHHH! GACK - My eyes!

(BTW- what would it do in the 1/4 mile? or Torque/Hp on the dyno?)

The throw on the crank is longer ( the offset connection points where the bottom, large opening of the rod clamps onto) the longer the arm the more torque produced...

Wow...It's actually really clean for a little rice rocket. I don't like it but I can at least respec it haha. We have a user on here (tylerdru) who used to be really active with a '66 (?)but he had to sell it and I'm pretty sure he got an Integra.

Anyways, 68scode nailed it. Figure out exactly what you want and then let us know. Anything can be done if you have the $$
