BS. That's not a classic set-up.If you want to go with a modern engine, then do so with a modern chassis. Quit screwing up the classic engine bays with crap such as this.

No offense to you since you own one, but the OP said it's a coupe. There were millions of them made and there is nothing rare/special about them. As long as it's not a K code coupe I would restomod the hell out of one.

id go with a 302 or 351 efi or carb since its a 6 banger car dont forget to change out the brakes and springs i see nothing wrong with efi on a older mustang the mod motor i do cats dont belong on classics if im cuting out the shock towers it better be for a twin turbo 460 not a 281 with some fat heads

For the power you desire, I'd go with a 302 or the 5.0L EFI motor depending on your budget and what you're intended use is. Having owned three different 5.0L GTs, I can attest to the performance, driveability and reliability of them.

As for them being out of place, beautyis in the eye of the beholder and I think James' engine bay looks pretty trick. Of course, I'd probably be accused of wrecking a classic fastback too because I have the serpentine belt setup and accessories from a Fox body on my 302 ... but I still do have a carb.

I swapped out my 250 inline 6 for a 302 in my 70 coupe. One thing to consider is the weight of the new motor.Your front end will drop considerably with the extra weight. If you dont change springs and return it to the same height, you will need an alignment to get you straight again. Before you pull the 6 out, measure the distance between the floor and your front bumper or anywhere you will remember after the swap.It is strongly recommended to upgrade to 5 bolt wheels, stronger rear end, bigger brakes will come with these things. My 70 was easy, the new motor fit hte bell housing,I already had an 8" rear end and the 5 bolt wheels.Aluminum heads took the weight down to nearly that of my six.You will also need a much bigger rad. good luck youve got a big job ahead of you.Take the time to get it right.
