Another Title question. VIN # on title missing last digit?
Hello all. The VIN # on the inner fender of my '65 and the # on the title match exactly, until the last digit. It's missing on the title. The last group of numbers on the car is 6 digits, where on the title its only 5.
I have not transfered the title into my name yet.
Anybody else run across this?
Should this concern me?
How much of a paperwork nightmare will this be to fix?
Should I transfer it to my name first then try to get it corrected?
Thanks a million in advance.

I don't know about your state, but when I went to sell my '65 GT I noticed that the VIN on the title had one letter different than the stampings on the fender and door. Ironically, it was the second letter 'R' (San Jose) instead of and 'F' (Dearborn). Anyway, all I had to do was fill out a form for a replacement title stating that there was an error, have it inspected by the DMV and wait for a few weeks for the new one to arrive. It was no big deal.

Thanks. I've decided to transfer the title into my name, then worry about correcting it. I think having to deal with the state only, not the state plus the seller will be the easiest. Anybody disagree?

Assuming you have a bill of sale and/or the titleand the car, I'd get it all taken care of at once. I don't imagine hell is too much different than the department of motor vehicles, so I'd only go once if you can.

the dmv will see that it was a typo and will help you fix it ... some times the dmv gets a bad reputation but all in all they are good people .... just look for the old lady with the hair lip....

No bill of sale. The guy I bought the car from, never transfered the title into his name, so I wouldnt even begin to know how to contact the person on the title. That's why I think it would be easiest to get it in my name, then start the fight of getting it corrected. If for some reason they want to talk to the previous owner (the person on the title), or need something from them, I'm stewed.
