Default 428 Engine Piston Damage??

This is a continuation of my post from a few days ago:
https://mustangforums.com/m_3179020/...tm.htm#3179020

Drove my car about 5 miles! as I did so that ticking go louder and louder, engine kept wanting to die, and started to run hot, as I drove up the engine guy says "You want the bad news?" no one likes to hear that! "sounds like something way down deep, I think you have a blown piston" of course if that's the case it's major! "he said let me check it out, from what I heard, sounds like it, 50/50 that it is that" So I am holding my breath to see what he says!

Symptoms:
No real power loss, but major loud ticking from the motor
No smoke, but there is a smell of burning oil
Starts to run hot about 5 minutes into driving.
Ticking get progressively louder when driving (almost sounds like a loose timing chain?)
Getting on the throttle the noise reduces a bit, letting off it comes back very loud.

So what do you guys think?

test all cylinders with a compression gauge..or leaktest gauge.. that will tell you if problem is really in a cylinder and in what cylinder the problem might be..
a smiple test and tell you already alot

Sounds like you have a rod bearing shot and your crank is most likely out of round by now on one or more pistons. I'd have to hear it in person to be sure though.

I think that you may be right! A rod bearing would make alot of sense to me!

have you taken off your valve covers and look to see if your rocker shaft is intact?

Well either way looks like I am in for a total tear down! at this point it is for sure 1 oftwothings! a blown piston or broken crankshaft, but that would be extremely rare! so probably a blown piston![:@] Dammm! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I really need to have better control over my right foot! I deserve this![&o]

This was my first thought afterreading the OPs description of the noise.

Could be a cracked piston, (or any number of other stuff I guess),,, but I think it is a rod bearing, I would give three to one odds on this.

If it was going to happen it was going to happen anyway. You getting in to itmay have speeded up the process a little, but it was gona break anyway.

A healthy engine will be able to take a lot of abuse before going south, the way you described the "abuse" of your car, no damage should have happened, unless the 428 is a very fragile engine, which I do not think it is.

I'm going with rod bearing as well. Really loud knock on decceleration is classic rod bearing, though it could be something else. Bearings don't last forever you know [8D]

only real way is to pull the heads id use it as a reason to do a little stroking maybe a bigger lift cam i know its a shelby but you can never have too much power.jmd i have blown up alot of different engines over the years most stock ones dont live with me even my truck has some work done to it
