it sounds to me like your points may not be set correctly. On a V8, you should set them with a dwell meter between 24&29. A shade tree mechanic way is to use a matchbook cover to set the gap, if you dont have a meter. I think changing the points and condenser would be best, its cheap, and easy to do.
