Default 9 inch rear in 65 stang ?

Got a question. Can I put a 9 inch rear in a 65 stang? If so what mods do I have to make.

A lot of help Nick (dodgestang) was.
Yes you can put a 9 inch rear axle in a 65 Mustang but it has to be from a 64 to 66 Mustang to fit. The housing is unique to those years. The other options are to have a custom made axle or a cut down variety from a different year Ford.

Just make sure the length of the axle housing is no more than 57.25 inches from flange to flange. 67 and up have a 59.25 inch axle.

What? I answered the question. Sheesh

57-9 Ford nine inch housing are also a direct bolt in.

If you buy a setup with a long pinion you might have to shorten the driveshaft slightly if you don't have enough depth left in the tranny, but if you pick up a center section that is not the extra long pinion, you will not have this problem.

I thought those were 8 inch axles in the 64 - 66 mustangs... are they 9 inchers?

A 9 inch rear axle was standard on a 289 Hi-Po engine equipped car and possibily on others with a special order.
