Default 302 Build opinions

Being a mod motor man I really don't know what is out there for the 302 right now so I'm turning to you guys/gals for some opinions. What I've got is a 68F-back with a 302 4v/C4 combo. I'm looking to build the engine, forged internals, and some decent heads/cams. I'd like to get around 350ish if possible. What are my options for getting there. Thanks for the help in advance.

its not hard to make 350 @ the flywheel with a 302, and its not impossible to make 350 @ the tire with a 302 either (it just costs a little more).

the best advice to give you is to hunt around in the 5.0 section, there are literally 1,000's of posts regarding 302 builds. basically its gonna go something like this for you......

flat top pistons
.500 - .550 lift cam (obviously a broad range but it gives you an idea)
aftermarket heads. ford gt40's could get you there, but its alot easier with some AFR 165's, Trick Flow Twisted Wedge, Canfield 170's, RHS heads, etc, etc, etc. pretty much anyones aftermarket head is good or they wouldnt be making them - the key is to not overdo it. i would stick with an intake valve size of 1.94 - 2.02 and a intake port size of 165 - 185cc's. roller rocker obviously, add a nice dual plane intake, lets say a edelbrock performer rpm airgap for instance, as well as long tube headers and decent exhaust. a holley based design carb in the 570 - 625 cfm range, and whatever other supporting mods you can think of like a decent ignition (crane is much better than MSD for distributors, coils, and ignition boxes)

and there you have it [8D]

Well I'm not quite sure what HP I'm at, but to give you a cost analysis....here goes; I have a 302 bored 60 over to a 308, Keith Black pistons with 10.5:1 compression. edelbrocks preformer rpm package (matching heads, intake, and cam) a 650 holley double pumper carb, MSD ignition (6A) hooker headers, and edelbrock 1 chamber flows. Also I installed a 8.8 rearend with 373 gears and posi. Its brand new like only 600 miles so I havent gotten it dyno'd, but My mechanic said between 350-400HP. It costed me around $7500 (3700 of that is a combined parts/labor for the motor) And of course I've been putting this together over the past severasl years but thats what it costed.

In my opinion there's no substitution for cubic inches, hence stroker. I used my own block- had machined from a reputable place. One way to know is if they use tourque plates. 302 blocks have a tendency to twist with age and loose there squareness. I priced out new parts rods and pistons, I also wanted a forged crank. After pricing everything out it made more sense for me to go with a scat 347 rotating assembly even having to pay the machine shop to clearance the block. I wound up not going with a forged crank but I went middle of the road steelcrank. The big expense is truly going to be the heads and from all my research and talking to the machine shop, they want me to go with Brodix ST05 heads but I think Im going to go AFR 185.Note Im using a block from a 91 Mustang GT so that I can still drive my 68 mustang and build the motor at the same time. I would think aboutmaking it a roller motor ifyou use your original block or do the same and get a 302 roller block that you can build and still drive your mustang.
