Engine options on a 68-69 fastback
I've always been a fan of the old style mustangs since i was 14, and saw one at a car show. Im now 21 and looking for a good project, and i've concluded i like the 68-69 fastbacks the most. I have a 'modifying personality' i've gotta mod every vehicle i touch, so i know this project car wont turn into a factory show car. With that said im kicking some engine ideas around and would like some feedback. I want to build my engine from scratch, im just not sure what to start with. Will a 429 fit without major mods? i know ford put the 429 engine into the 69-70 boss but i've been told the frame had to be reworked in order for it to fit. I dont have a problem welding/modifying the frame, but im curious how much work would have to be done. Im also kicking the idea of building a 351, this is somewhat more appealing to me due to the fact that there will be less if any fitment issues, and there's tons of parts available.
Anways, this forum looks like a good place to gain some info.

RE: Engine options on a 68-69 fastback
The 67/68 and 69/70 fastbacks were availible with everything from a 200 CI six to a 428 FE big block. As yo have mentioned, the 69/70 was also available with the Boss 429, not to be confused with the standard 429. The Boss heads were the reason for the need to rework the shock towers. Aftermarket chassis mounts are available to bolt the 429/460 into 67-70 mustangs. The 351w is a very popular choice for the reasons you mentioned. I'm partial to FE's but they can get a bit pricy. A Cleveland is a great choice as is a stroked 302. And then there are the "Street Bosses" 302/351. I don't think there is a wrong choice, you just have to decide where you want to go with the project and how deep your pockets are.

I like the 289/302. they have to be the fastest reving motors. To make the fast you have to spent some money on them[&o]. In the 1/8 the can beat most big blocks. For the street, they are the best.

yeah if i were u, i'd just get a windsor and stroke it, that what i did with mine i got a 351w and stroked it to a 408 stroker i just installed it in my 69 coupe ill let u guys know what i get on hp etc...but overall 302 still can beat the big blocks out there so i mean there are alot of hp parts for small blocks so i mean u can get the same amount of hp the big blocks are getting. the site i got my stroker is at coasthigh.com they sell some great kits, to bad there prices are going up. but good luck on your stang
