I am in process of swapping an 89 EFI 5.0 into my wife's 66 Mustang. I am swapping out the oil pan for a front sump unit, and I am not sure what to do with the dipstick tube. Currently, it is located in the side of the block, but this won't work with the front sump pan. I know some of the older engines used a dipstick in the timing cover. I have the 89 timing cover and accessory brackets on my engine. Any suggestions? Can I simply drill a hole in the timing cover in the location where the older cars had it?

you can drill a hole in the timing cover if it has a boss to drill into..for the hold on the side of the block get a wooden dowel rod and cut it to a length of a few inches and tap it into the hole the oil and heat will make it a tight seal

Just get a timing cover with the dipstick hole in it if you can't drill yours out. If you are running an electric fuel pump you can put a block off plate on the timing cover for the fuel pump.

I have a timing cover from a 67 289 with the dipstick hole, but I didn't think I would be able to bolt up all of the accessory brackets from the later engine, as well as the later water pump...will it all fit? I don't want to track down another set of brackets and pullies.

I will take a look at the timing cover on the engine and see if I can drill it out.

It should fit fine.
I'm more concerned on how to make sure the block dipstick hole is sealed properly.

Thanks! I need to pull all the accessories off the engine, so I will be able to check the timing covers side by side to make sure everything will fit.

yeah and id pull the timing voer when you go to drill it instead of trying to mask and catch all the alum shavings
