Where can they be found? Is there a shop that has them or will I have to hunt swap meets? I remember there was a shop called Dan's Transmissions that used to specialize in them but I'm not sure if it's still around.

That was Dan Williams shop that specialized in top-loaders. He moved from Miami to a small town in western NC back in the 80's.Don't know if he is still around. I just put a T-5 i my car after concluding ther is no such thing as a good used 4-speed. There are good 4-speeds and used 4-speeds, they just cannot be found in the same case.

I'd recommend David Kees. He is THE toploader guru. His is the www.4speedtoploaders.com website. I believe ~$800 gets you asolid rebuilt toploader.

I have seen quit a few on e-bay. I found mine for $400 on craigslist with a factory Hurst shifter.

Thanks guys. I ended up finding Dan Williams' shop. I might have to rethink my tranny selection though. I plan on using sn95 brakes and the power booster will be in the way of clutch push rod and z bar.

I might have to go with a G Force T5 instead. Shi*

If you really wanna get a tranny that can handle power, get a Tremec, either a TKO 500 or 600. They're easier to get parts for, very reliable and can handle a crapload of power. And if you plan on doing performance, you'll want gears, which means you'll want at LEAST 5 gears if you drive it regularly

Tremecs are nice...but they don't fit into early Mustangs without 'massaging' the tunnel. Tremecs are wide at the top, so you have to either bash the crap out of the tunnel or cut two strips out on either side to accomodate the transmission.

A Geforce T5, however, will easily fit, and will handle just as much power as a Tremec.

Not to say there's anything wrong with a Toploader. They're pretty much indestructible and work fineif you don't want to fork out that extra $1500 or so for the OD gear. People have been getting along just fine with 4 gears in their Mustangs for 40 years

I think as a general rule of thumb, you can say that any aftermarket part will require some degree of cutting, welding, bashing, smashing, hacking, twisting, bending, modifying or otherwise "massaging" to get to work right. And whoevercame up withthe term "bolt on" should be whacked in the crotch.

But yeah, Toploaders are tough
