Default 65 Coupe Transmission

Hi,
I have an automatic transmission (believe it is the original) with my 289 engine. When driving it sounds like it only shifts once but runs okay at 55-60 mph. I dont know the RPMs when going at 55-60. Is this normal or should I feel it shift twice?
Thanks
Don

OK, the 64-66 shift pattern is a problem for people used to newer cars. You have

P
R
N
o
O
L

The big O is normal drive. The little o is for driving in rain and snow, and eliminates 1st gear to reduce wheelspin.

Do some searching on Green Dot transmission?

The shift pattern goes like this:
P - Park
R - Reverse
N - Neutral
White Dot - starts in 2nd gear, automatically shifts to 3rd
Green Dot - starts in 1st, autmoatically shifts to 2nd & 3rd
L - EITHER first gear or second gear, depending on the gear you are in.

I just put in a green dot C4 in my car and was totally stumped about it only shifting once. But after I went back to the tranny shop and did research is when we discovered exactly what you guys just stated. It is weird having to shift it down 4 times for drive but it works fantastic. I am running it behind an I6 and the RPM maxes around 3000 on the hwy.

Default I never knew what the green dot was!

I have owned my Early 1965 for five years. I do not normally go to car shows, I just drive my car and enjoy it. Last week I took it to a car show. At the car show I learned a few things about my car.

Yep, I never noticed that it only shifted once. I tried the green dot position, and what a difference. You can really feel the shifting. Since I drive my car often, it was to dirty to win any awards. It did show well and was the only red, on red, with red seats. I truly have an original early 1965 from what the spectators that looked on told me.

As everyone has already stated. It's a green dot. In my old 67 I had the tranny rebuilt and the valve body replaced. When I got it back I could not figure it out for a month or so. The valve body was replaced with a 65 green dot!

Sometimes with the transmission shifting down to first you can get the one of the tires to break loose from the pavement.
