The C-6 is made for a larger displacement engine, and is not the best choice for a small block. It can absorb as much as 60HP just to drive the tranny, wast of gas HP.
A C-4, or AOD/AODE is a much better selection. I prefer the benefits of an overdrive tranny, you can gear lower, for better performance, and retain fuel saving, benefits of an overdriven top gear.
One way or another, the C-6 is a good choice only if you have no other, economically feasable choice. Save you money.

+ it is my understanding that any c-4 will bolt to a SBF with the right bell housing, but the majority of c-6s will not bolt to a SBF... because they were used most often behind big blocks and "m" motors that used a different bolt pattern. The bell housings on a C-6 is not removable...
Come to think of it, I have a c-6 that was bolted to my 351 when I bought it,,, so SBF / C-6 combos may be more common than I thought...
Just be careful,,, and remember Mr. EFIs advise.

I have a C6 behind my 351W. Another thing to consider is that a factory crossmember will not fit on the transmission when using the 302/351 - C6 combo. You will have to fab something up.
If the transmission wasn't already in the car when my brother got it 20 years ago, I would have opted for the C4, but the damn C6 just won't die!!

The C6 was available in Mustangs starting in 67. The 67 and up C6 used the same trans crossmember as the FMX. The drive shaft and crossmember from a C6 equipted Mustang would fit 65 and 66 Mustangs but you would need a U-Joint to mate the bigger drive shaft to an 8" rear. The Mustang shift lever from a floor shift C4 will also fit the C6. The C6 is tuff and will fit. The bellhousing isn't removable as has been said so you would need a SBF pattern.
I do agree that a AOD would be nice, but consider the cost of one and the custom drive shaft, cross member and TV cable. A C4 can be built to handle a lot of HP but a stock C6 will too.
Good luck.
