the easiest way for you to go is to get something that will bolt up as a direct replacement for a 302. this means either a rebuild 302, a 331, or 347 (both strokers but they use a 302 block). check out summitracing, jegs, ford racing, or even ebay to get an idea of what crate motors run. then contact the guys over at tandlengines and let them build you one.

In a word...no. The Boss 302 motor is a track motor, definitely NOT somethingmeant tobe driven around on the street. It's designed to wind up to 8k and make heaps of power, but suffers poor throttle response at lower rpm's, making it not very street friendly. Good for a vintage race car though.

I am gunna have to disagree with you there...the boss motor was used in street cars for homologation for the track. the track engine was further improved and in track form, no good for the street.

the issue with theboss 302 for a street car now is purely availability. they are rarer than rocking horse poo and a block is worth more than some of our cars and thats assuming you can find one!

+1 my77 - shop around
btw, what are your plans for upgrading the rest of the car to suit a more powerful engine?

Even the tamed down street version wasn't very good on the street. It's driveable, but won't be much fun compared to a nice stroker build. Fact is, the engine was designed for Trans Am, not for street use. The massive ports in the cleveland heads make low end throttle response meager at best. It'll work great on a track, or open roads where you can wind it up and keep it there, but light to light it won'tperform nearly as well as, say, a 347.

And availability is no longer an issue as Ford Racing is beginning to sell crate Boss 302 engines in preparation for the new Boss 302 Mustang planned for '09 (which will use a 5.0 mod engine).

IMHO the BOSS is no longer a good motor. Now before you all tell me I have no clue what I am talking about let me clarify. The BOSS was a high performance 302 that made good power by using heads the breathed much better from the Cleveland line of motors and a corresponding intake to deal with the size difference, and a few other performance parts. In its day is was the way to go because there was NO aftermarket. All motor builder had was stock part and they could modify them and swap them around but that was it. In today’s market where every part of the 302 is being reproduced in a “performance†version there is no end of options. A 302 with aluminum head such as, but not limited to Edelbrock performer RPM, good compression 9:1 up to 11:1 a performance intake like Edelbrock performer RPM, aggressive cam 280 or so, and a 4 barrel carb, will make more power than a BOSS. The only time a BOSS is worth the money is if the car it is going into IS a BOSS.

Starfury and Daze, I fully agree with you both. My point was more that you just cant get one at the local swap meet. but if you could get hold of a Bossblock withits4 bolt mains, screw in freeze plugs, and then add the current aftermarket stuff...

is the new ford racing engine a true improvedblock or just a using the name wiht some fancy parts?

It's improved. An amped up replacement for the Sportsman 302's they had. I'm not sure how it matches to the R302 though, unless they intened it as a replacement. Screw in freeze plugs, 4 bolt mains, beefier all around. Heavier, but a tank engine compared to a stock 302
