i picked up my Ford Explorer 8.8 for $150 at a JYD

limited Slip, 3.73's and Disc Brakes

a mechanic buddy of mine installed it for $150... (new leaf spring mounts, shock mounts, couple of fittings for the brake lines, etc.)

alot cheaper than buying just a limited slip for your 8" or a 9"

and your mechanic is looney

it is 1/2" wider than my 8"

9" rears that fit 67's are NOT easy to come by, and will cost you a pretty penny. It's much easier to grab an 8.8 out of a fox and have the spring perches swapped. Much lighter, and still stronger than an 8".

However, labor for the 8" is EXACTLY the same as a 9". The posi unit and gears, however, will cost a little more because 8" stuff isn't quite as popular as 9". But it's still there, and the difference definitely isn't enough to justify doubling the price. Assuming you have an 8" and not a previously swapped 8.8, tell your mechanic to stuff it, pick up a complete assembly off the net, carrier and all, and you can swapit out in your backyard.

Listen to 69 redruM. I had a friend do the same thing, and when I break my 8 thats the route I'll take.
