Another way to tell is typically the 8" axle tubes taper near the ends, whereas the 9" do not.

a) Should I somehow find out what gears I have in the 8
b)see if they are strong enough and leave it as is
c) If I blow the 8 apart, will I do more damage than its worth?
d)Is it a better investment to upgrade before anything goes wrong
a) easy to do, jack up 1 tire put the car in neutral, spin the tire 1 time, count the revolutions of the pinion
2.8 turns would be 2.80:1
3.5 turns would be 3.55:1

b) the factory gears are all the same strenght (within reason deep discussion over your head)

c) if it blows up th will not hurt anything else

d) sure, if ya got the $$$ if ya dont drive it till she blows, i only changed mine because i found an 8.8 with better gears and a limited slip cheap
