no paint and driving in the rain
so guys.... i have a question... my car is nearly road worthy (i think) and i will be driving it soon enough.... the only thing is i wont be able to afford a paint job for a while.... right now the car is just primer.. i read on an old post that driving a primered car in the rain is not a great idea because the primer absorbs the water.... so what can i do till i get a paint job... i know the rains are coming in the next few months... any ideas..... maybe just buy some cans of car paint and put a crapy coat on till i get sanded and repainted? i dont know

that may be your only choice bro, kinda a ghetto paint job...Either way you'll be scraping it back down to bare metal before the paint when you can afford it, cuz the primer will not only absorb water, but it will retain it, allowing the steel to oxidize causing rust....goodluck man

Yes, primers are porous unlike topcoat paints. Driving in the rain, or even letting it out in the moisture, will allow it to "soak" up water. If you choose to just run it in primer, your bodyshop guy will have to sand it down to baremetal and work from there.
Hmm, I dont know what other option you'd have other than dont drive it much until you get the car painted..

if you dont like the idea of a cheap looking paint job then you could use some epoxy primer and that stuff should give you some time since it is more waterproof than regular primer.
i think a primered car looks better than a spray can painted car so thats probably what i would do if i were in your position
