Are mechanical fuel pumps suppose to be REALLY noisy. I recently noticed my fuel pump making alot of noise while it's pumping. I can hear it with my hood closed from 30 feet away. My car isnt stalling or surging so it doesnt seem to be malfunctioning, its just f*ckin' loud!!! By the way this is my first carb/mechanical engine. The only other classic Ive owned was a '64 Impala w/ a fuel injected LT1, so sorry about the dumb questions.
Generally, no. What kind of sound is it? If the return spring fails (which isn't uncommon) they can make a loud tapping. Are you sure it's coming from the fuel pump?
