help picking 289 parts
i have a 289 that i am looking to add a newintake manifoldandcarburetor to. currently i have a Wiend intake, not sure which one, and a stock 302 (600) carb. i also am thinking about getting windsor jr heads, as i currently have 302 heads. i dont know too much about the engines and am having a little trouble finding out what works and what dosent. i was thinking about trying to make it like the 306hp hipo motor and adding a larger carb and high rise intake. maybe amking it a 4bbl?im not sure if this is a good idea or not. just looking for a good combo that will run better andhopefully make a bit more power than what i currently have. thanks.

RE: help picking 289 parts
IMO it is always good to go 4 bbl when doing so is within your budget.
When looking for new heads, carb, and manifold, you need to try and get a matched package, by either matching the parts yourself, or getting a pre-matched package.
Also, all of the new stuff has to work with the old parts that will remain, whick brings about some questions. Is your engine stock? I will assume so since it still has a 2bbl carb, and how many miles are on the engine? This is an important factor whe going with new parts on an old engine, not so much the intake and carb, but IMO it is an important consideration when going with new heads.

RE: help picking 289 parts
well, it was rebuilt less than 3,000 miles ago. its stock in the sense that its not bored, and i dont think anything really changed except the heads, intake, and carb and cam. not sure what kind of heads, rods or crankwere used, but i am assuming its close to stock. i just dont like some of the parts the guy i bought it from put on, like 302 heads, i think i can get some better parts. thats what im trying to figure out, is what will fit. where is the best place to find this information out? maybe a local performance shop? or if someone on here has a good combo. thanks.

RE: help picking 289 parts
Get yourself the PAW parts catalog $5.00, How to rebuild your small block Ford engine is a good book to have. High performance engine parts and interchange is also good to have. Most auto parts and specialty houses will have them, You can also try used book stores and Amazon or Barnes/Knoble book stores. Summit and PAW catalogs have cam, head and carb specs to help with your decision. Try not to over cam or carb your engine. Driveability should bethe goal. Like others have said, look at the whole package, Engine, trans, driveline anddifferential. The should all work together. Why build up an engine for performance then find out your car has 2.80:1 gears in the diff? Kind of hard to get off the line with those gears.

RE: help picking 289 parts
You need to know what intake you have, the cam, compression etc, so you don't buy mismatched parts. The right heads and induction, with a decent cam, and you can make plenty of power and it'll drive nice too

RE: help picking 289 parts
an easy combo for making some nice power without going overboard would be:
factory ford GT40 or GT40P heads
that summit 218/228 .471/.471 cam im fond of for people not wanting radical power
wieand 8124 action plus or an edelbrock performer rpm intake
holley 570 street avenger / barry grant 575 / or even a cheaper holley 4160 600
so long as you have headers and decent exhaust you'd be very happy with that combination

Can't go wrong with this combination.

RE: help picking 289 parts
but wouldnt i want heads that have a chamber size of 58cc, to make sure that the compression is higher, because dont the gt40 heads have a larger (60cc i think) size. or would theyflow so much better thatthe little loss in compression wont even be noticed?
