Default 1969 Mustang - 390 FE Big Block Questions -

Drivetrain ;

390 FE (C7ME-A with only around 2,500 miles on rebuild)
TRW 2291 Forged Pistons
C6AE-R ("Poor Man's Cobra Jet") heads
Holley Street Dominator intake manifold
Comp Cams 268H "K-kit" during rebuild (new cam, springs, valve stem seals, timing chain)
Hooker Super Comp Headers(6114s)
Mallory Unilite 3755301 Distributor, Mallory coil and wires
Holley Street Avenger 770

C6 Transmission - New flexplate - New torque converter (stock, 1600 stall I believe) - Resealed last year
9" Rear - Trak-Lok - 3.89:1

Im wanting to know if i could upgrade my cam to a Comp 280 with my current setup?...btw im using the stock non-ajustablerocker assembly.

Also, which carb you think would benefit this setup the most(being correctly tuned of course)my Holly SA 770 or Edelbrock 1411 750c ?

THANKS!

The 280 might start stressing the stock rocker arms a little, especially at higher RPM's. You'll also start having issues with the stock torque converter.

Yes, with that engine I think you'd be very happy with a 280H. However, you really need a higher stall torque converter. I had a 268H and it didn't really make any real power until 2k or so.

I have a 280H with Rhoads lifters in my 331 and I love it. The Rhoads lifters give me power from 1500-3k,and the cam pulls hard all the way to 6200.

Im looking to get my power from low to mid range, and keep it street friendly as this will be my daily driver until the first snow.

I will change the lifters/ rocker assembly the moment ive decided on a cam. 280h is a good direction. Any other ideas/set-ups you guys recommend oratleast tried? THANKS!

Hrm. If you're looking for more bottom end power, I don't think the 280H is going to help you. It's not going to be as mean in your engine as it is in my small block, but it's more of a mid-high rpm cam. It has a 2k-6000rpmpowerband as opposed to the XE268's 1500-5800rpm powerband. If you're looking for more grunt, you really need to get a better torque converter

Consider a new torque converter installed. Bottom end power is what im after. Im looking for a range of ideas of a cam setup though.
rocker assembly/lifters - ?
valves/springs - ?
Timing chain - ?
cam ?

Come on guys, lets hear it! Im interested in hearing your setups !

What's wrong with your current cam? I had the XE268H in my 331 up until a couple months ago and I liked it well enough. And since you've got the whole K-kit, everything except the rockers(whichare ok, but not great)should be up to spec.

If you're really dissatisfied with that cam though, the best way to maximize power would be to get a custom ground cam. If you call Comp Cams and tell them what you want, they'll be more than happy to grind something to fit your needs.
