Default Carpet - 1964 1/2 or 1965 ???

Hi everyone,
I'm pretty new to the forum (first post after some lurking).

Anyways, I've decided to replace a few things in my 1965 convertible. It was built in August - I believe "1964 1/2"s were built through July? So my car is a mismatch of 64 1/2 & 65 parts (frustrating!!)

Are the floor pans deeper on a 64 1/2? I just bought some new carpet (1965) and its not fitting correctly. I've read that in 1965 the carpet was 3 inches longer, and that it goes under the door sills rather than butting against it.

But it looks like the carpet I just bought is too small altogether. It almost appears to fit, but when you press down where it meets the floor pans, the carpet goes down several more inches and inward away from the door sills. It seems to me from what I've read, if I tried to put 1965 carpet in a 1964 1/2, it would appear too big - but like I said earlier, the carpet won't even reach the sills when someone's feet are on the carpet.

Am I making any sense?

1 more quick question: I also ordered a window felt kit. The felts on my car were half the size vertically and were in place with screws (a bunch of them). The new ones of course have the things that press into the slots on the door. Should I just use these since it looks like they will fit anyways? Maybe the screws were something a previous owner did, I dunno....my car has both slots and screw holes on the door.

Any help would be much appreciated! THANKS! Mike

You can tell your car's year model by looking at the VIN ( left front inner fender or left door). It will start with a 4, 5, 6 etc.... Floor pans are all the same thru 68. (M106). If your carpet is that small it may be mis-made. Contact the carpet oem for further help.
What are window felts? Do you mean the beltline trims?

Hey, thanks for the replies.

As I stated inmy original post, my car is a 1965 (by the VIN, but barely - last week of August). I thought it was pretty well known that cars around that period got leftovers, etc from the first run. My car has an alternator as well as other 65 features.....but many 64 1/2 features as well (hood, door handles without screws, etc)

So I'm just trying to figure out what carpet to use since the 1965 carpet I just ordered is too small. However, the 1964 1/2 carpet is supposed to be even smaller from what I've read.....so that's where I'm confused.

I'm going to measure from the floor up to the sill plates and see what I come up with. Maybe someone on the forum has a 64 1/2 convertible and someone else a 65 convertible with the carpet currently out? I guess even with the carpet in I could get close enough. I'm stumped!

jlg2002 - yes. window felts.....window felt beltlines... btw - do you know how I could contact the oem? Maybe they have measurements on file?

Thanks again! Mike

My ride is a 64 1/2 and I went through the same problem.

I was told that the 64 1/2 has a slightly narrower carpet than the later model 65, and that those models had that bare metal look on the sides right next to the sill plates.

I didn't like it, so I went to an upholstery shop and they custom-trimmed a thin undercarpet to cover the bare metal...now it looks fine.

I'm told the 65 has slight different configuration and will not fit correctly on a 64 1/2.

Hector is correct. The "64.5" carpet's lateral borders ends where the floor pan meets the frame rail mold. At this location, where the carpet ends laterally, strips of vinyl (I think the substance it vinyl - others may confirm this) with colors approximating the carpet color were placed on the sides.

This was changed in the 65 models - the lateral borders of the carpet were extended to reach the door sill and be partially covered by the step plate. I think the 65 carpet also added a driver toe pad.

It sounds like you may have 64.5 carpet?

Check out the Virginia Classic Mustang or other catalogs for more details.
