how smooth should shifting from D to R be? (Auto Tranny)
Hey all,
I have a TCI Street Fighter Automatic tranny (C4) and a 347 Stroker, mild cam. When I shift from D to R or vice versa it shifts easily but drops into gear kinda hard.
Do you think this is normal?
It has been this way since I bought it in July. The tranny was new about 19k miles ago.
Should I check the U joints with the "grip the driveshaft and yoke and turn" trick or should I not worry about it?
BTW, I am pretty sure there is a shift kit because it shifts a little hard from 1st to 2nd but otherwise everything is smooth: fast and responsive and fast!
Thanks all!

I have the original c4, and if I am light on the gas, it will shift lazy and easy. If I am in the gas pretty good though it will bang shifts pretty hard. I had it professionally rebuilt about 5 months ago and it has been like that since, so I am assuming it is normal.

I also have an original C4 and the shift from first to second is very smooth when I'm easy on the gas. Under harder acceleration when I'm getting into the throttle pretty good the shift takes a few seconds and the engine revs really high while its shifting. Im assuming this shouldn't be the case since ya'll said it shifts hard and sudden. Am I right?

My stock (as far as I know) c4 shifts kind of hard from park or drive or reverse to other gears. My brakes are also not working as they should and I think maybe if I was holding them harder it would shif smoother.

I had a C6 on my truck, they are pretty much the same tranny. Mine was still pretty fresh from its rebuild and it would grab onto gears pretty hard if you would get on it. It was smoother under light acceleration but you still could feel it.

Thanks for all of this feedback fellas. It makes me feel a little better to know your trannies are behaving similar to mine. I have had someone tell me that the shift from Park into Drive or other gears was rough due to a shift kit.
I was mainly just concerned a little about shifting from Park to Reverse or vice versa since I have been making adjustments to my idle with the help of some folks on here. Which by the way, I think I finally have adjusted right as I am not getting any "dieseling" other strange sounds when shutting her off... that we were talking about. runonsentencesiknowitsthetequilamybad.
cheers all!

I have a C4 with 3000 stall converter, reverse valve body with(manual) Cheetah shifter (also 302 and 4.10 rear gear). Sometimes itlurches when shifting into drive (1)...sometimes it doesn't. If I shift through my 3 forward gears atREALLY low rpm, she's smooth with no lurching. I drive it this way 95% of the time. If Iaccelerateany more thana little(i.e. anymore than 1000-1500 rpm) between shifts, she'll lurch really hard. This is how I drove it for a long time until I learned to baby it. What it is really set up for apparently is full throttle driving. When I mash the loud pedal to max. rpm is when she drives/shifts the best. No lurching (alright maybe a little from 1st to 2nd, but it's a most satisfying "chirp"), just excellent transition/shifting which makes me believe that this is how my trannywas truly set up to drive.
