Removing the power steering?

Removing the power steering?
Hi all,
I am curious about something. Is it simple to remove the power steering on a '67 with a 289?
Is there a real weight gain? As it comes from the engine, I should theoretically expect more power if I remove it, right?
Thanks.

RE: Removing the power steering?
i believe its simply a matter ofr changing over the drag links to the manual steer type, and remove all power gear. The weight gain won't be noticeable, maybe 20-30 lb the power gain will be perhaps 2-3 hp? not much anyway.
These are not the main reasons many people remove thier power steering. The main reasons are.
1 - its stuffed and too expensive to fix
2 - you get better "feel" from manual steering.
If neither of these are applicable to you, then leave it alone.
Don't do it for the reason you mentioned.

RE: Removing the power steering?
I did it to my 67, 289 Coupe and I really like the feel of manual steering and I was glad to get rid of the noise & leaking pump. All Idid was buy the adapter to replace the control valve and remove the rest . Make sure if you do this to replace the control valve with the adapter because the valve will fail over time and fall off your Pitman Arm and you have no steering . The adapter was $132.00 from NPD.
