Painting A Mustang
how much (about) would it cost to paint a 1970 fastback simple black? i hear black is the cheapest color because theres no complicated mixing and what not......is this true? how much is reasonable for black?? ive heard as high as $5,000 to as low as $500 dollars.....what is the actual average cost if just a simple black paint job? thanks

Black is an E-Z color and it all boils down to how much do you want to spend. The $250 MACCO paint job will work if you do all the prep work, remove crome and such, and color sand afterwards.

250 bucks....? is it total crap or is it not bad? is it glossy or sort of like....not...? sanding as in prep work or sanding down the paint.....dont you sand the surface first, then paint, instead of sanding the color?
thanks

My car has a $500 macco paint job. It is nice and shiny. There is a bit of over spray. They don't remove any hardware, they just paper and tape everything. It is not what you would want for a show car or anything like that. It is a cheap paint job, but looks decent.

What I mean by color sanding (also called wet sanding) after the paint aplication, is just that. It is a process that sands the paint super smooth and shiny. I will take out all the orang peel and inperfections. It can make the $250-$500 paint job look like a $4,000 one.

wow thats really interesting! i looked around on the web and found info and pictures and stuff but didnt really find any prices for it...im assuming its something that you could do yourself, but i doubt i would try it because of lack of tools and experience....how much do you think it would cost if the people who painted it were to do it?

It would be cheapest to do the body prep work yourself if you know how to and also to paint the car yourself if you know how to, but chances are you probably will not have the proper equipment nor booth to paint the car yourself, so my advice is to learn how to prep a car yourself through the use of several air tools. Doing this you shave off a good $2,000 for labor by sanding down to bare metal yourself. Paintjob itself does not cost that much, and if you have a bare metal car (or itd be better to shave down to bare metal and then prime the car yourself) you can get someone to paint the car for very cheap. Black is not necessarily the easiest color, and it is also not the best color for a mustang. Black paint brings out the most flaws in your car (and Navy Blue). My car is black and i'm working the body myself right now and its really hard to get the flaws out, but its not that big of a deal, you just have to work more of the details in yourself.
All in all, if you're looking to save money, don't go maaco because you'll get sunspots and orange peel like a mother within a year and they dont care. If you want a good lasting appealing nice job, do as much of the prep work yourself and get a nice paintjob (If entire body is ready to paint--meaning you've done all prep work yourself) for only about $500-$900.
