Default 1968 Shelby engine question 390 or 428?

So I read that ford ran out of 428s in 1968 (before the 428 Cobra jet in the middle of the year) and they susbstituted the 390 in some 1969 Shelby Mustangs (which looked like an indentical twin of the 428).

Does anyone know anything beyond that sentence?
How was Ford able to get away with that?
Did they do something else to the 390 for it to increase it's performance?

Sneaky little bastards! lol j/k...i dont know. I have heard on here that you can bore a 390 to a 428......thats alot of meat though. I will say that i would be PISSED if i were to get a modified 390 rather than the 428 i was "suppose" to get.....IF thiswere true.

It's in a lot of books, the details are just sketchy.

It is a known thing that happened but somehow they got the 390 to perform a lot better. I am just wondering if anyone knows how they did it.

Ford started with a 428 in the 68 Shelby GT 500. About half way thru the production year, it was changedto the 428 Cobra Jet.A 390 in a 68 Shelby? That would be an odd ball. I can't remember seeing anything in the books about that.

I will scan the page an upload tonight. it's in several books, i'll just upload it from of them. It's a known thing that happened.I was just wondering how they did it . I believe they might have used a 428 crank with the 390.

I also never saidthe 390 outperformed the 428t. I said it made the 390 perform better. Again, this is a known thing,I am just asking for details.
