RE: manual tranny questions
No, the 2.77 is adifferent tranny than the 3.03. The 3.03 is vastly superior; it's pretty much indestructible, and very similar to the 4sp toploader. It will bolt up to a 4sp toploader bellhousing. Not absolutely sure, but I believe the 2.77 will as well. Not sure why you'd want to do that though, the 2.77 is made out of paper, for all intents and purposes, and has no 1st syncro.

RE: manual tranny questions
I went though 3 2.77's in my '65 when I was in H.S.
You have to vitually come a stop to put the car in first gear!
Finding transmissions was a nightmare because all the one in the junk yards were already broken!

RE: manual tranny questions
They're both toploaders, however the design was butchered in later years (70's and on). The one in my '71 from the factory was a 2.78:1 geared 3-speed, and it was fairly stout, and shared the bolt pattern with the 4-speed.
There are a few websites that have the history of the toploader, google it up and have a read.

RE: manual tranny questions
thanks guys...but i'm still not too sure which 3-speed is in my '65 mustang
the stamp on the side of the tranny reads RAN S . David Kee Toploader website states that it is out of a '67-68 mustang, but it doesn't state if it's a 3.03 or a 2.77 model.
did the 2.77 trannys have the same style of identifying # 's as the 3.03?
is there any way of looking at the two trannys and seeing the difference?
if someone has a '67 shop manual, what does it state for the identification letters, for a 3.03 3-speed tranny?
