Default 9" rebuild

Well, I was going to buy a new 9" unit, but due to price, I think I can build one just as nice but cheaper. So, for all you who could go back in time and fix a rear-end mistake, what would you do? Here's my plans..

I found a good, correct size, housing and am getting the guy to sand blast it for me, for 154.11 shipped. I plan on powdercoating it gloss black soon as it arrives. Dunno the price of that, but lets say 100.
254.11$ vs 340.00 new.

After I get that all together I'm going to try to find a good 3.50, trac loc, 31 spline center. Also going to do a disc conversion that utilizes MarkVII rotors and Cadillac calipers, which will also match my front setup nicely. Axles will be new 31's Mosers.

Engine is mild 351W and hopefully will match up with an AOD auto.

What you think? Nic

Sounds expensive by the time you are done. What are you figuring 1000 for the whole thing when complete?

Actually, SuperDavid bought a 9" kit that I was considering before I decided to build one. It is very nice and at 2grand-ish, not too bad a price.

Im thinking 1200-1300, but we'll see.

Have you priced the 31 spline axles yet?

I haven't decided yet on 3.5 or 3.7 gears for my 9" with the AOD. I'm leaning towards the 3.7s. Maybe even 4.1s if the price is right. We've got a lot of big hills around here.

My suggestion from a past mistake on my first 9" rebuild in my truck is make sure to check and recheck your torque specs and then check and recheck when you put it together. Also make sure you get the backlash set right. It wasn't the next day, it was actually about a year down the road that the rear finally went out of alignment and heated up and siezed up. It is quite a sight to see a 9" melt, you don't see that everyday.

That sucks man! Im not going to build the center section myself justbecuase of that reason. I don't know the complexities of that regionlol.

Edit: Damn, he rose the prices to 425+shipping for the axles, bearings, etc.

I'm just getting started on pricing my 9" rear end. I've priced rear disc conversion kits, and have only recently heard of the using thedisks from a marc VII and cadallac calipers. I'll get to my first question. What is the bolt pattern for the rear discs, are they 5 on 4 1/2? Second question, what year Marc VII and what make and year cadallac did you get parts from for your 9". You mention the discs matching your front end, I've got drums all the way aroundgot anyadvice for converting my frontend over?
